Love Does for Kids

Faith in God can be exciting, daring, and fun. Love Does for Kids, shares some of the Goff family’s adventures—from holding a neighborhood parade to writing presidents from around the world.

As a little boy with a big personality and even bigger dreams, Bob Goff had lots of questions, and they didn't go away when he grew up. It wasn’t until he learned just how big and wild and wonderful God is that he began to find answers. Once Bob learned about the deep goodnessof God, he began to learn about the great power God gives His kids when they live a life full of love for others.

Bob and Lindsey invite kids to get to know God better and to see the world as a place designed to be changed as we put our faith in action.

(I received a free advance e-book of this title from NetGalley, but all opinions expressed are entirely my own.)

I read Love Does for Kids not having read the original Love Does, although I have heard so much about it. The author shares 46 separate stories that illustrate the love of God and how we can turn around and demonstrate that love to others.

I read many of these stories with my eight year old daughter and we both found them delightful and inspiring. Goff uses stories from his own life, his experiences with his family and inspiring stories from other people he knows to illustrate how we can both understand the love of God ourselves and put that love into action towards others. This is a great tool as a parent to help children understand their identity as beloved children of God while also inspiring them to put that love into action. It would great to use as a weekly family devotional, reading one story each week or can be read in its entirety in several hours.

The illustrations were equally delightful and there was at least one beautiful illustration for each story. They really brought the stories to life. I highly recommend this book for family use, reading aloud together or to give to any child of elementary or middle school age. It would make a fantastic gift or addition to any family library and will inspire parent and child alike to demonstrate love in the world.

LOVE DOES FOR KIDS is an awesome book with 46 chapters for kids ages 6-10 — all beautifully illustrated — by force of nature Bob Goff and his daughter Lindsay. This is a highly engaging follow-up to Goff’s New York Times bestselling LOVE DOES, and features stories about love in action, as a way of sharing his Christian faith. It’s a great book to read with children during Family Night or as daily inspiration.

Goff is a guy who promised each of his kids an adventure of their dreams, from high tea in London to riding motorcycles across the Mojave Desert. He’s had a life of high adventure and high service, providing legal defense for children caught in sex trafficking, teaching witch doctors in Uganda to read, and supplying food for needy remote African villages. Gives you an idea of the spirited energy Goff brings to his latest release. Highly recommended! 5/5

I cannot say enough great things about this book. If you have a child, get this book and read it together. I fell in love with Bob Goff's book Love Does. I was over the moon excited when I saw him and his daughter wrote a version for kids and was so honored to be selected to read and review it. The language is written to where my six year old had no problems understanding. And it was simply amazing to watch how he connected with the stories, asked relevant questions and watched his heart grow stronger for God through this book. That alone sold me, but there is so much more to brag on with this book. The stories are a beautiful integration of life experiences with how to love God, love others and explain God's love and grace. As an adult I was encouraged reading this book. "Not only does God love you but He really likes you." Such a positive message we all need to be reminded of, regardless of our age. And the anecdotes in each story - they are written in a manner that a kid can relate to (even us big kids) while always pointing us towards God. And as if that's not enough, the illustrations are out of this world great and engaging. This book is the total package whether you read it as a family, your child on their own, you as an adult or even use it in your child's Sunday School class. I can promise you this book will be gifted to many nieces and nephews (and several adults...) for Christmas. I cannot recommend this book enough. Buy it, read it, check it out, and let us all learn to love so beautifully as Christ loves us.

My thanks to Bob Goff, Lindsey Goff Viducich, Thomas Nelson Children's Publishing and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It truly was an honor.

Having read Love Does and Everybody Always by Bob Goff, I was delighted to see he and his daughter had written Love Does For Kids. Bob Goff is a storyteller and kids will certainly enjoy the stories he tells in this book.

He has taken stories told in his previous books and now told them for children ages approximately 6-12 years old. They are stories which will draw them in and help them to realize faith is simply lived out in our everyday world, wherever life may find us.

Each story points to a spiritual lesson to help children grow in love towards God, and people. Love Does for kids will encourage children to be other-minded, kind, and thoughtful to those around them.

The book is beautifully illustrated, the pictures are colorful and engaging, as they whimsically tell a story on their own. It will make a wonderful gift for any child.

This is a book children will be able to read on their own, but would be a wonderful book to be read together as a family. This book delivers the precious reminder –

God gave each of us unique talents and abilities of our own and we all can make a difference in our world.

*Harper Collins Christian Publishing provided a copy of this book. All opinions are honest and my own.

Love Does for Kids has been wonderful reading to my children each night. I have been surprised that my seven, five, and four year old have been so attentive while I read a chapter book with them. They even requested to read more chapters each night. The content is fun, funny, full of love, and always circles back to how much Jesus loves us. We will read this one again!

I was offered the first five chapters of this book for my honest review and I cannot wait to have my hardcopy arrive so we can finish the rest. From the first chapter all four of my kids were interested and intrigued- we discussed questions and had great conversation from the simple story that was discussed.

This book is a wonderful addition to Bob's other books and a necessity for young kids! I was so excited when I first heard about it and now I can't wait for the publish date to arrive so we can finish.

The writing style is similar to the other books but at a perfect level for children; my 9, 8, 6, and 3 year olds we're all able to understand and enjoy it without the vocabulary being too difficult or the lesson over(or under) their heads.

Bob Goff has a way of showing every individual created, no matter the age or background, just how important they are to God and to others. You can't read this book and not feel the immense amount of heart and truth in every story he shares with us. Each chapter provides you with enough encouragement to go out an be the hands and feet of Jesus as it reminds you of those sweet, simple moments that you may have forgotten when someone did just that for you. I highly recommend this book for all, but especially to any adult who has influence in the life of a child.

I am so grateful to have received an advance copy of this book from the publisher!

♥️♥️Love Does! ♥️♥️
My only complaint about this book is that it wasn’t around when I was a kid and when my own kids were younger! It’s fantastic, and such a great way to get this message across to kids. Love Does for Kids is beautifully illustrated and written, broken down into different stories that demonstrate Gods love for us and how we can share that love with others. I adored Love Does and I’m ecstatic that there is now a version for children. Bob Goff is an absolute delight and bringing his daughter in with him to write this just adds to the magic. For me, Love Does for Kids was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Thank you @thomasnelson for this advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

This is a great book to share with kids during family worship time or as a bedtime read-aloud. It has short stories with charming full-color illustrations. I love the way it encourages kids to make good choices in a wide range of real-life situations. Great for character building and helping kids develop a personal faith.

This wonderful book was written by Bob Goff and his daughter Lindsey Goff Viducich. Geared to children 6-10 years old, the book contains the warmth, humor and life lessons that you’ll find in Bob Goff’s books Love Does and Everybody Always. In fact, if you’ve read those books, you’ll be familiar with a few of these stories, along with many delightful stories of Bob as a child. Each of the 46 brief chapters contains colorful illustrations from Michael Lauritano.
The authors write:
“This book is for kids, big and small. This book is about the new kingdom Jesus invites us all to be part of – a kingdom we can enter only if we are just like kids. In the kingdom of heaven, we are all becoming a little more like children and a little more like love – and learning a little more about what love does”.
This book will make a wonderful gift for the children in your life. I can see some parents reading the book to younger children, while older children will enjoy it on their own. Either way, reading this book will be a joy for kids of all ages.
Below are 25 of my favorite quotes from the book:
• God’s love for us doesn’t change on our worst days. Come to think of it, we can’t earn more of God’s love on our best days. We are simply loved by God, no matter what, and because of Jesus, God doesn’t define us by our mistakes.
• We need to give love away like we’re made of it, and sometimes that comes out in the smallest, simplest acts of kindness.
• Lots of things in Jesus’ kingdom seem to be the opposite of what you’d expect. Jesus said that the people who weren’t well-known would be leaders. He said that the people who were overlooked would actually be most noticed by Him. And in Jesus’ kingdom, our small acts of love can help other people in really big ways.
• The words we say to one another have tremendous power, so let’s make them words of life.
• I think He knew that the more we stand in awe of Him, the less we’ll stand in judgement of each other.
• Sometimes it’s easy to forget that when God thinks about you, He gets a big smile on His face. He didn’t just create us; He really, really likes us too.
• A lot of times, when we think about loving others and building Jesus’ kingdom here on Earth, it’s easy to believe that we need to have everything figured out before we get started. But we don’t.
• When you’re thinking about how to show people love, go big. Imagine the most extraordinary thing you could do to love others, go to your heavenly Dad for help and advice, and pursue the creative dreams He has given you with everything you’ve got. In the end, God doesn’t delight in our successes; He delights in our attempts.
• The gift we give to Him is enjoying the gifts He gives us and sharing them with others. We show Him how much we love Him by how much we love others.
• Being friends with someone without expecting anything in return has the power to change the world.
• What Jesus really wants most from us isn’t our best manners. He wants us to be good friends with Him and good friends with one another, showing love in ways that break all the normal rules.
• No matter what happens, we don’t have to be scared anymore. Jesus knows all about the things that scare us, but even when we feel a little scared, we can remember that He’s our friend and He’s not scared at all.
• Opening up our home to friends all over the world has taught us that real friendship means that we love everybody all the time, just as they are, and that everyone is welcome.
• Instead of worrying about whether or not we have enough to offer to others, we can trust that offering the best we have, even if it isn’t perfect, is enough.
• Love and forgiveness carry the most weight when they are done, rather than simply said. God didn’t simply tell us we were forgiven; He sent Jesus to be with us and show us that we are forgiven.
• Jesus said that real leaders love their enemies, serve the poor, and treat others the way they want to be treated. The type of leadership Jesus taught about is hard, but it can change everything.
• Every time you forgive someone who has hurt you or go out of your way to serve someone who needs help or stand up for someone who is being picked on or share what you have with someone who has less than you, you are helping to heal the world.
• Following Jesus isn’t easy; it costs us something. But that doesn’t mean it will cost everyone the same thing. Figure out who God wants you to be and then do what it takes to become that person.
• The things we create are only as good as the foundations they are built on. When you make your life about the things that matter most – loving God and loving others – you’ll have a solid foundation for building everything else in your life.
• When we actually do the things Jesus said – giving food to people who are hungry, being generous with our time and money, or being nice to people who are mean to us – our hearts with follow our actions, and our faith will become real.
• We are not our successes or our failures. God delights in our attempts, and He loves walking beside you when you try new things, even if it takes a few tries to get them right.
• God delights in surprising us. I’ve found that in my hardest moments, when I feel the most in need of encouragement, I don’t hear God’s voice talking to me out loud – instead, God sends me a friend to remind me about His tremendous love for me.
• When someone does something to hurt us, we need to give them a chance to make things right. By responding with kindness instead of hurting others back, we often become even better friends with them and get to show them the kindness of Jesus.
• If we quit the things that aren’t God’s best for us, maybe we’ll have more time for things that matter.
• Sometimes all we can do is walk through sadness with each other, not around it. God gave us each other so we wouldn’t need to pass through the most difficult times alone.

When we were on quarantine I overheard my son’s teacher reading from this small book for their morning video devotion and it created some good conversation and lots of encouragement. We ordered it for our family and now it’s become our favorite family devotion book we’ve read through. We were inconsistent and read a few times each week. It’s a great mix of metaphor and concepts about God’s love. Not too flowery for kids but also not dumbed down theology either. True to the theme in each devotion of love as action, imperfect but worthwhile.

Bob Goff's Love Does is so renowned, it's great that he and his daughter wrote a children's book for kids. Thankful to partner with netgalley and read an advanced digital copy. It's a must own for me.

My first surprise was, a wonder, do I like this book even better than the version for grown ups? And I think my answer is yes. The tone of the stories, the integration of how Jesus and God fit into every type of experience and stories from the Bible seem more connected, more frequent, and deeper in this book. It totally could be me, but this book is amazing.

The illustrations are warm and beautiful. The book is 224 pages. It releases October 23. It's been a while since I read Love Does- but it seems to me that this kids version seems to be more directly connected to the Word of God and who God is, how He shows himself through His Son Jesus, and how it affects our lives. And it is obvious that his daughter, Lindsay, the co-author is an educator and has a therapeutic approach- the sense of people is spot on.

What I liked about the book

warm, child friendly colorful illustrations.
references to different bible stories and events.
Love makes the difference message connected to a message of God's work and love.
Chapters are short, quick, focused reads.
People of different races are depicted in the images.
Bob Goff's attitude and mindset is one that the world needs to emulate, and somehow he gave it to his children with such a spirit of love and joy, it seems natural, and I wonder why all of us can't always be this open minded, and open to seeing the world as a group of our friends.

What I wondered about the book

why not share or link the references to the biblical concepts. I really like the for further study or connections that some authors do.
transitions between stories were abrupt feeling at times, but the book is about love, not a sequential life story, and as the book moves on the pattern appears.
Some stories seem unbelievable- but then again the way the Goff's approach things is counter cultural- and that makes these unbelievable stories- all that much more believable.

How I might use the book:

To discuss how mindset affects everything.
To teach a lesson on how we see someone, an event, our neighbors- is all an opportunity for fun, ministry, and inclusion, instead of a mindset of that's impossible, that won't work, etc. The can do attitude developed by the Goff's is biblically driven and that's why it works.
One chapter teaches the definition of restore and justice- so a lesson intro or background info for a topic that uses one or both of those works- this could be a great hook.
Pick a chapter and use is as a writing prompt- share a similar experience you have had.
Pick a definition or connection to God and seek out verses from the Bible that show that this concept is true- or contain the same phrases. If you can't find a verse- is there a hymn, a teaching, or someplace you've understood the same concept about who God is, and how He loves us, gives us grace, and helps us?
As a read aloud in a Sunday School class, lecture, family, it would work in many scenarios.
Discussing character development, inferences, visualizing, connections, things all great readers use to comprehend a story, as well as some solid analytical skills.
Inspiration and encouragement for what a God centered, love driven mindset can do for a person. Growth-God mindset.

My kids have heard Love Does and Everybody Always audiobooks in the car so they were already Bob Goff fans. When I let them know a book JUST FOR KIDS and with pictures was on the way they were very insistent they would each need their own book. I am so glad I bought one for each because this is the kind of book you save to read to your own children and their copies have a home now next to their beds. I'm actually getting one for our family library so they can keep their copy and I'll have one to read to small visitors and family later in life.
The book itself is designed to be extremely kid-friendly. It's about the size of a grown-up chapter book with a hardcover so it fits in small hands easily. The cover is very durable and lacks one of those ridiculous dust jackets that kids hate and instantly lose. The stories are about 5 pages each with lots of beautiful colorful illustrations & language that kids can understand.
When you read it you feel like you're sitting at Bob Goff's feet and he's telling you a story. My kids are 6 & 8 and have managed to read the entire thing. More than once they've come running to read us a funny bit or retell us a story or show us a picture. They've started drawing fan mail to Bob & Lindsey and are using the word caper in conversation so I'd say the message is landing well. The stories show a character trait of Jesus in a way kids understand and help them want to be more like him without being overbearing or using guilt in any way. Whether you are considering this for your home or to use in a Children's Ministry setting you won't regret buying this one!

Love Does For Kids is the same concept as Love Does (which Goff wrote a few years back), but with smaller chapters and simpler packaging of the ideas. Goff and his daughter co-wrote it based on the original book. It also has a great a focus of asking questions to get the reader to translate how God’s love works for them into action steps they can DO in their life to pass God’s love on. I have been reading it aloud to my young elementary aged kids, as part of our homeschool daily circle time. It’s officially recommended for ages 6-10, and I agree. My four year old enjoys listening as well, but his ability to grasp the concepts in each chapter aren’t up to what his siblings get out of it. Each chapter takes about 5 minutes to read, and it’s structured something like a devotional, but it’s very conceptual rather than being based on a specific scripture or doctrine taken from the Bible. My kids find the stories interesting, and I can pretty easily ask questions to help them relate the concept or lesson shared in the chapter to their lives.
**EDIT** Finished the book and it keeps getting requested for a second time!

I’m not really sure there’s anything that doesn’t work about these books. They aren’t very intellectually rigorous, but that’s not their point. They aren’t arguments for Christianity, but that’s not their purpose either. But, if you’re looking for a convicting and encouraging look at God’s love for you, and a simple and engaging way for it to be explained to your kids – Goff’s books hit it out of the park.

A year ago a friend mentioned how she greatly admired Bob Goff; whenever she had some extra money, she'd order more copies of his book Love Does, as she was always giving her copies away to friends. I picked it up on her recommendation and admired how transparent he was in sharing vignettes from his life. While the chapters can work together as a whole, they can also be read as standalone stories.

Love Does for Kids uses shortened versions of some of those original stories, includes some new ones, and adds in illustrations to make it accessible for children. The same whimsy is present, and each story cleverly transforms the engaging anecdote into an example of better understanding God or our faith. This title would be a good read-aloud with my daughters, and they would both be engaged with the antics.

Perhaps it's hearing how Goff's children wrote world leaders, asking to meet them and then going on a world tour when they were invited, after which some of their connections resulted in hosting those same leaders in their own home. Or maybe we're hearing about the annual parade where everyone in the town participates, no one sits out to watch. Whatever the story, the words and experiences draw you in and leave you reflecting on how you, too, might engage similarly in the world around you to live out your faith.

This is an absolutely amazing book of vignettes for kids that teaches them how to love Jesus and others, in an active way. Bob Goff is an author, a lawyer and a layman who carries the actions of Jesus to the world. He helps those who cannot help themselves and this book encourages children to do the same. I really enjoyed the chapters about the new heart and the medals for Charlie. We all have a new heart and we all need medals. It was encouraging for me to read that God is cheering me on in my daily struggles in life, and I am confident that this book will be an encouragement for children. I recommend this book for ages six and up, and I highly recommend that parents read this book with their children so that the parents can discuss the chapters and the truth available there. It is important to apply truth, not just to know it, and that is the theme of this awesome book. LOVE DOES is all about doing for Jesus, even if you are only a child.

This book comes out near the end of October, but I received a sampler from the publisher of the first few chapters (which is what the review is based off). I look forward to reading the rest when the book comes out.

Overall, Bob Goff is a masterful storyteller and I enjoyed reading stories from his childhood and the accompanying spiritual lessons.

I will say, though, that I noticed at least some of the stories did not quite compute with the spiritual/theological lesson. For example, in the chapter on mistakes he describes a time he accidentally stepped on a child’s nose and then compares it to the unpopular tax collector in the New Testament, who is like a kid who steals your lunch money. I don’t deny that a tax collector is a little like someone who steals your lunch money, but there seems to be a difference between someone who intentionally wrongs another through stealing and harm and someone who makes an “accidental mistake.” Tax Collectors were not mistakenly taking money from people; it was quite intentional. This is part of the reason (there were also others) that they were disliked so much by their fellow countrymen. So, the comparison just sort of fell flat for me.

Even so, I think other portions of the book seem quite good and I could see them generating good conversations with your kids as you read through them together.

From my 8-year-old:
"I think that it has some really funny parts but is also very serious at the same time. It really has made an impact on my life. It has just helped me be more confident in myself. It's really helped me find more ways to love others and to show people God's kingdom and Jesus. The chapters were perfect for me {he's talking about chapter length.} The illustrations are very beautiful and colorful, they are just right. I think that children ages 4 and up would really like this book. It's soothing, but at the same time, it's also very funny. "

As a Mama and a big Bob Goff fan, I loved this book. We have been reading a chapter after breakfast and another after dinner. My son has gone back after almost every meal and re-read everything we've already done. I have never seen him love a book this much and he's a total bookworm. He can't wait to read more and talks about the book all day long. I love that it's a book for kids written from a strong male role model- not many of those exist. I think this would be a beloved stocking stuffer for Christmas this year and a book I would love to see in the hands of every child. By far the best kids book I've seen in a very long time and my favorite Christian children's book.

We were grateful to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of this book to share our honest opinion with you.

Bob Goff, with the help of his daughter Lindsay, shares with kids stories from his own life that demonstrate principles of a healthy walk with God and how to practically love others. Each of the stories is about 4-6 pages in length and illustrated.

This would be a great book for families to read together for daily devotions or for teachers at Christian schools. Bob and Lindsay have done a great job of adapting some of the stories from Love Does into language kids can understand. (I’m guessing a large part of that is thanks to Lindsay’s experience as an elementary teacher.) There are also several new stories in here too. Kids should enjoy the stories, as Bob has a good mixture of amazing stories and very relatable stories. But they each share a different point that kids can easily grasp and immediately put into practice to strengthen their walk with God and with others. The adults reading with the kids are likely to get a whole lot out of the stories too. Highly recommended for any Christian family with elementary kids in the house, Sunday schools, and Christian elementary school classrooms. I’ll definitely be ordering a copy or two for our school.

Magical is the word that comes to mind when I think of this book. I wish there had been a book like this when I was younger. My relationship with God could be a on a whole different level. Bob Goff never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think "OK, Bob surely can't outdo himself again??" HE DOES! He teamed up with his daughter Lindsey to write this beautiful children's book. Let's just say this daddy/daughter team puts the DYNAMIC, in Dynamic Duo. This book is so well written. So simple. My children actually look forward to reading this book every night. They listen and hang on to every word. My youngest told me that he wants to read this book all over again by himself when we are done reading it as a family. WOW!!! This has NEVER happened!! Every chapter brings tears to my eyes, the way Bob and Lindsey explain God's grace and love. Kids can relate to the examples that are mentioned in the chapters as well. It's as if you are a child all over again. Sometimes, when you try to explain GOD's grace to children they get confused. After you read this book, no matter how old you are, it will leave you with a profound sense of God's love and grace. Like I said....Simply magical.

Our family loves Bob Goff!  Love Does is a book that inspires one to act their love out.  Bob is a storyteller extraordinaire!  He can weave a tale like few authors I know.

This time around, Bob partnered with his daughter Lindesy to write a similar book to Love Does, but for kids.

When this book arrived in my house, before I could even touch it, my 14 year old took off with it!  That is saying a lot.  It was not just once that he was found reading it on the couch - but multiple times.  He gives it a raving review!  Eli said it was easy to read and fun to read.

This book is a great read-aloud for families or a perfect gift for a pre-teen aged person.  It is broken into 46 short readings, that would be ideal for devotions.

Each story is an example that Bob Goff uses to demonstrate how we can all live out a life that shows love to others.  Our family has thoroughly enjoyed the stories Bob shares through his experiences.

I highly recommend any books by Bob, but think this one is a great one to share with the family or would be a great gift for a child in your life!

NOTE : I received a copy of Love Does for Kids in exchange for an honest review.

I met Bob Goff on a cruise many years ago. He mentioned during his speech he had written a book called love Does. I was so very enchanted with this man's way with words that I immediately bought that book once I got off the cruise. I read the book, listened to the audiobook, and encouraged all my family to read it. Since that time I have read and purchased many copies of the second book written by him Everybody Always to give away.

Therefore, it was my honor to be selected to read and review this new book Love Does for Kids. The authors do a wonderful job of making the stories kid friendly and including relevant illustrations for each story. I found it easy to read for a child of elementary age level. I loved this book so much that I have already preordered two copies for the young readers I know and love. I can't wait to hear what they think of it.

I truly appreciate the invitation to read and review this work. I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher at netgalley and offered my unbiased review.
